Capturing the early days

baby in her nursery

The arrival of your new baby is such a magical time.

It is just so easy to forget how small they once were, as they seem to grow before your eyes. It won't be long before their head no longer fits into the palm of your hand, their body will stretch too long to nestle and rest along your forearm, those tiny flaking fingers that grip so tightly onto your thumb will grow, the snuggles into your chest become less frequent.

Those first few weeks of your newborn's life is such a blur, as you realise this tiny human you have is wonderfully, here to stay. The tremendous love you feel is like nothing else you have imagined. No one can prepare you for this. Hours can be spent just gazing at your baby's perfect features. The days just breeze on by as you feed, change nappies, sleep (maybe), and repeat.

This fleeting, beautiful moment has become a permanent fixture in our home, with prints adorning our walls of my baby's first few weeks. My son, almost two now, loves looking at the photos in our hallway of the "bubba" in daddy's arms, recognising his older brother snuggling with a new baby, perhaps not yet understanding the ""bubba" in the photos is him, though one day he will. For me, it's a nostalgic everyday reminder of how little my babes once were, a quick trip down memory lane. These photos make me smile, and are especially calming when I have a screaming (almost) two-year-old hanging off my leg.

The type of newborn shoot you decide on is completely up to your own taste. Lifestyle newborn sessions are done in your own home, so you can show off your beautiful, thoughtfully designed nursery. These sessions are more natural, documentary, lasting around 1-2 hours in the comfort of your own home. Sleeping or awake shots, minimal to no props, just you and your family interacting in your own environment. This is also a good option for older babies. Plus, you don't have to rush out the door with your new babe to make it to my home studio by a certain time. Bonus.

The other week I travelled to Lake Macquarie to capture the adorable six-day-old Florence Zara with her besotted new mum and dad, and fur sister Winnie the dachshund - who really put it on for the camera! Here's a little look-in to their session.
